Book club misery.

I don't know how I keep NOT learning from my mistakes, but this time I REALLY need to.
I'm part of a book club made of women mostly in my ward. This month was my month to host and pick the book. Well at first I picked "Smilla's sense of Snow". OOPS! I really need to read books myself before I recommend them to anyone. For any of you out there considering reading this book, DON'T! That is unless you don't mind depressing negativity, horribly unnecessary and gross sex references and a disdainful attitude towards anyone with less than a genius IQ. It's safe to say I HATED the 160 pages I slogged through. The only thing that kept me going was the intrigue that the mystery caused. But even that couldn't keep me. I would have stopped after the first 50 pages, but I'd already recommended it to the whole group and knew some were already reading it. Holy cow I almost birthed one when I realized what a mess I created for myself. So there I was with two weeks left till the book club meeting and I didn't want anyone thinking I read, let alone liked or recommended this terribly innappropriate book! There are no words to describe. So. I called my friend who basically runs the club and said "STOP READING!!!" we sent out an email changing the book to "The Flame trees of Thika" I feel much more confident about this one as it was written in 1959, but I haven't read it either. Like I said, I need to start learning from my mistakes! (Harlene I picked it cause it was on your book list, do you recommend it!? I would have picked Kite Runner but most everybody had already read that one.)

So I'll tell you the fallout of the book club after it happens and If I recover from the damage.

ugh.

That's so funny...I wish our ward did a book club.

I loved Flame Trees of Thika and I would highly recommend it. However it is a memoir, not a novel. I tend to prefer those.

I am very anxious to hear your thoughts about it as I've never met anyone else whose read it.

I had a similar reaction as you to Twilight. Bleh!
