Harvest!

I haven't posted about my garden lately. I wanted to show you a little of the fruits of my efforts you may (or may not) have been reading about this year on my blog.

I recently covered my garden with plastic to sheild the tomatoes from too much rain. If they get wet and stay wet they easily get the blight up here. But as I was putting it up I realized I was too late, they already have it! So I tore out a bunch of the extra branches to creat airflow under the plants and I ended up carting a huge load of green tomatoes into the house.
The ones on the ground in this pic are either half eaten by slugs, have too much blight to consider trying to slavage or got squashed as Iwas clearing a walkway. Seems like such a waste... I was told just last week that if you hang bunches of green tomatoes in a dark closet that they will slowly ripen, and you can have fresh tomatoes all winter... Oooooo... : P .. So I tried it. I washed and picked off any damaged fruit. I tied them on to the hangers with thread and stuck them in the back of the coldest darkest closet we have. Hear's hoping it works!

And here is a note about my poor cucumber situation. I was really hoping for a lot of summer pickles this year, but alas... this is the only cucumber that grew this year. I'm saving it for a special occasion.
The tomatoes really grew rampant and out of control this year. (Usually they don't grow at all!) The ground was so fertile they just kept spreading out and covered up all the cucumbers, not to mention the peppers, carrots, garlic, cabbage (the ones I hadn't picked yet), marigolds and even the onions were a bit smothered. NOTE TO SELF. Prune and tie up the tomatoes next year!.... or plant them somewhere else. Hmmmm. Maybe just expand my garden? ... Oh, what a shame that would be!... ; )

My last tidbit is about our volunteer pumpkins. They ended up being the minature pumpkins and are way cute! There are three of them, one for each child...Perfect.

Your harvest looks wonderful! I'm hoping I get at least a few beans, squash, and tomatoes. (Here in Florida you plant in the fall - silly seasons.) I probably haven't posted before, but have followed the link from Susan's page a couple of times. Have a great day :)
