You know it's going to be an interesting next few minutes when your neighbor calls and the first words she says are, "So let me just apologize right now."
She asks if I've looked out at my kids playing yet. She tells me her son brought the hose, so that is why she's apologizing. She says Claire's clothes are unrecognizable. I look out the window and my three younger kids have made a mudslide down our dirt mound, and they are taking turns sliding down.
We laugh, chagrined at the work ahead of me. I go in search of my camera... which is missing a card of course and I have to search for that too. I finally locate all the devices necessary and make my way out to the deck and the kids have since disappeared from the mound. After looking around I locate their trail... around the deck and into Claire's room.
Oh. Yay.
The next few minutes I captured on video for all of your viewing pleasure.
So I just stayed out of it. Claire, the amazing girl that she is, washed down both of her brothers, with soap even, and the next I saw of them they wandered out to me clean, in towels and ready to be dressed in their jammies...it was 8:30 at that point and so I dressed the boys and when I managed to screw up enough courage made my way to the bathroom. Claire was just finishing wiping up the last of the mud smears.
How amazing is she?! I thanked her for cleaning up her mess and said, "It's ok to get muddy like you just did, as long as you also clean up like you just did. Otherwise it's not fun for anybody else."
I have to say BIG smiles over here.

Wow! What a terrific girl! We are very proud of her. She knew what was right and did it. Way to go Claire! We love you. It also shows that you have great parents who teach you right. We love you all.
Love the playing in the mud.
Love the apologetic call from the neighbor.
Love the obvious, "We played in the mud. We made a mudslide."
Love the responsibility.
Love the carefree fun of childhood. Next time call me. I'll come join them.
