My garden

So last week was spring break and my big plans and accomplishment was getting my garden ready and even partially planted... though I found out yesterday that I shouldn't plant till the end of April as some freezing temps are coming... oops! (So now I have to cover my little garden with tarps or something at night and some days too till May.) oops. So here is the before and after of my garden. This was our rabbit hutch for a good 2 1/2 years. Sorry looking heap of this and that to keep the little buggers warm or cool or hydrated or dry...Its redeeming quality was that it was fenced. Well, after feeling the need (for quite a few months) to simplify our life, we sold our Rabbits (and Goats) on Craigs list as well as the caging, water lines and other paraphenalia. Which left us a perfect, sunny little fenced area with piles of "fertilizer" already in place. Then this last week we removed the roof frame (and now Dan has another place to store stuff out of the rain. Um... Yay?) We kept the fencing to keep out the deer, and hopefully other interlopers. Then came the preparing of the ground. I used about half of our very good fertilizer for my new garden soil. I double dug the piles and some of the dirt beneath them. Gideon was such a good sport and helped me build raised bed boxes and then we filled them with our garden soil mix. I.e. the "fertilizer", some vermiculite, some barn litter, as well as some loamy dirt out of our yard. There's a pic here of us screening it to keep out the rocks. (We've had a LOT of dirt piles around lately what with the shop constuction and the ditch we dug to bury power lines out to it etc.) I also buried a soaker hose 3 inches under the dirt. So then on SAT the 12th, with temps in the 70's (!! :D !!) I strung my Square Foot Gardening lines and planted some seeds and the starts I had bought. I was so greatful for the help of our friend Brenda who did a whole lot of spading for me. Claire was not such a good sport but she WAS a good helper by watching Isaac for me for "toooooooo long!" and Gideon was right there by me most the time helping out. I have such great kids!!!! And after helping me plant the onions Claire was saying..."I'm starting to like onions now Mom!" What we planted:
carrots
spinach
chard
onions (red and yellow)
cabbage
garlic
lettuce
peas
zuccini
and summer squash. I will plant tomatoes as well as the rest of the seeds later. I'm so excited about my little garden! My mouth is watering already! True love and home grown tomatoes!!!

Your garden looks fabulous! It appears to even be coming up already - how'd ya do that? We cleaned out most of ours last Saturday with those warm temps, but it snowed on Tuesday, and maybe again this weekend...:( Good excuse to not get it all done? Tell Claire thanks from me for watching Isaac for SOOO long! Love t'all!
